The Signs of Fascism project by The Audacity has been adapted from a Westerville, Ohio activist effort by our Visual Arts group. Meeting in Rockland, Maine, we’ve taken historian Tim Snyder’s list of the signs of fascism and turned them into literal signs that we regularly show on the roads of Knox County and the greater Mid-Coast area of Maine. This effort is educational activism — many people simply don’t know how to recognize fascism when they see it.

Signs of Fascism (SoF)
Silent Protests/Action Plan
- Please arrive 15 minutes early to allow time to choose a sign and
organize. These protests are coordinated and planned according
to the logistics of each site. The action plan will vary depending
on traffic flow and other considerations. Arriving early is integral
to allow for the successful start of each protest. - Wear all-black clothing; Face masks are optional.
- Participants stand in one spot, far enough away from each other
to enable the signs to be easily read (at least 30 feet apart).
Unlike our weekly protests, we do not wave or acknowledge
anyone in any way. We are acting as human sign posts. - If anyone tries to engage with you in opposition, remain silent. If
you feel threatened, walk away and alert others to the situation. - Always be aware of your surroundings. Look around often and
stay alert. - Know your rights! Click this link to read the ACLU’s Protesters’ Rights information
- Video-record and/or take photographs of the protest and post
and share on social media. These Signs of Fascism silent protests
are a growing movement and are generating interest across the
country .. and the globe!
