On Saturday, August 15, 2026, The Audacity CAT, in collaboration with Lincoln County Indivisible (LCI) and Indivisible Waldo County (IWC), will stage simultaneous “By Land or By Sea Vigils” in multiple sites along the Midcoast area. The aim of these vigils is to bring attention to Chief Justice John Roberts, who has summer homes on Hupper Island, and his ultra right-wing transformation of the Supreme Court. In the court of public opinion, and according to a recent Pew Research Center poll, more than half of Americans view The Roberts Court unfavorably.

A few of the Court’s most recent, and egregious, rulings include:
In 2022, in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, Roberts wrote a concurring opinion with the Court’s decision saying it was Constitutional for Mississippi to ban abortion after 15 weeks, even after rape, incest or abuse, adding that abortion regulations that considered whether the fetus is regarded as “viable”outside the womb should be discarded; this ruling subsequently overturned Roe v. Wade.
In 2024, in Trump v. United States, Roberts authored the Conservative Bloc’s ruling that the President has absolute immunity for official acts; this is counter-constitutional, dictatorial and king-creating governing.
In 2025, in United States v. Skrmetti, Roberts wrote the majority opinion that upheld a Tennessee law that prohibits medical providers from prescribing gender-affirming care, which in turn harms transgender and gender nonbinary youth, and allows politicians to supersede the rights of minors, parents and medical professionals.
In 2026, in Louisiana v. Callais, the Conservative Bloc gutted the Voting Rights Act, particularly for BIPOC people (Black, Indigenous and People of Color). Justice Kagan, in her dissent, wrote, “I dissent, then, from this latest chapter in the majority’s now-completed demolition of the Voting Rights Act.”

John Roberts, perhaps the most powerful person who summers in Maine, needs to understand that Mainers oppose his anti-worker, anti-democracy, anti-LGBTQI+, anti-women, anti-BIPOC, and anti-immigrant agenda. We demand changes to the Supreme Court that will restore democracy, allow checks and balances, and give “We the People” the right to freedom and justice for all!
